Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Hippocampus procerus are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Hippocampus procerus, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Hippocampus procerus, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Kuiter, 2001

Very special thanks for the first two photos of Hippocampus procerus to Ian Banks, he took the photos on the Gold Coast Seaway, Queensland in Australia, thank you very much Ian!

This seahorse was descripted by Rudie H. Kuiter in 2001.
Hippocampus procerus occurs on mixed algae reef of the continental shelf in a depth down to 20 meters and feeds on zooplancton.

The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail.
