Info
Very special thanks for the first photo of the phantastic barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) to Kim Fulton-Bennett, Public Information Specialist, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
This photograph shows a deep-sea coral Gersemia juliepackardae at Gumdrop Seamount, off the Central California coast, about 1,000 meters below the ocean surface.
The pale pink coral, which is growing on a dead sponge skeleton, was named after Julie Packard, head of the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
This image was taken by a still camera mounted on the remotely operated vehicle Tiburon, which was built and operated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI).
