Assiculus punctatus is a small monotypic dwarf perch with small, bright light blue spots on the head and body.
Males are bluish and smaller females are greenish-yellow.
The perch inhabits turbid nearshore reefs and herbaceous beds, in the Northern Territory, Australia, it prefers heavily eroded limestone reefs, usually in relatively muddy water .
The fish is considered a "secretive species", meaning that it lives hidden and is not often observed.
