The dwarf sea roller occurs from the tides to depths of 37m and can be found on sandy soils and soils with shell grit throughout its range.
Miller and Pawson (1984) point to the extraordinary discovery of T.C. Shirley reported several specimens of this species that lived deep inside sponges. No entry point was found. It was assumed that Aslia pygmaea entered the sponges as juveniles and continued to grow there.
