Nassa serta (Bruguière, 1789)
A snail from the family Muricidae, called spiny snails due to their more or less pronounced spiny shells. Members of the family have a horny operculum to close the shell opening. The small to large snails are distributed worldwide, but are most abundant in the tropics on or near coral reefs. The predatory snails feed on invertebrates, injecting their prey with a neurotoxin. Some species produce a slime from which purple dye was once obtained. Muricidae is the largest family of sea snails.
Nassa serta is moderately abundant on a range of lagoonal, pinnacle and seaward reefs, including the intertidal zone where it lives under rocks. Nassa serta is collected for food.
