Info

Oliva australis Duclos, 1835

The Australian olive is a shell snail from the family Olividae, colloquially known as olive snails. Members of the family have a smooth, cylindrical shell. In the living animal, the edges of the shell are pulled over the outside of the shell and the casing is polished nice and smooth. Olive snails do not have an operculum to close the shell opening.

They are widespread in tropical seas. The predatory snails live on sandy soils and dig for food. Olive snails are carnivorous.

Oliva australis has a shiny, pale, elongated shell, usually decorated with purple zigzag longitudinal lines and alternating brown and white markings. It grows up to 3cm tall.
