The similar Australian stingray, Himantura australis, is distinguished by smaller, more closely spaced dark spots in juveniles (as opposed to larger and more widely spaced spots in the leopard stingray), a pattern of speckles or reticulations in larger specimens (as opposed to a pattern of dark rings) and a less pointed snout tip (as opposed to a pointed snout tip).
Himantura leoparda is also often confused with the stingray Himantura undulata, but in the end only DNA tests can help if a correct identification is to be made.
