Selene peruviana belongs to the family Carangidae and is a benthopelagic, demersal and predatory species that generally forms shoals near the bottom. Juveniles are found near the surface.

The Peruvian moonfish is silvery in color, while the pectoral and caudal fins are yellowish.Juveniles have a black spot on the flank.
