Info

Using hand nets, a new species of amphipod was collected from floating brown algae (Sargassum horneri) in the East Sea of Korea.
The male amphipod was 1.36cm long, while the female measured 1.16cm.

The detailed description of the amphipods can be found in the article “First record of the family Calliopiidae (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Amphipoda) from Korean waters, with description of new species Calliopius ulleungensis sp. nov.” in the appendix.

Copepods and amphipods are important members of the food chain. Along with krill and mysis, they make a major contribution to the nutrition of the following creatures in the food chain.

Etymology
The name of the species is derived from the type locality, the island of Ulleungdo in the East Sea of Korea.

Similar species: Calliopius columbianus Bousfield & Hendrycks, 1997
