Astyra mclaughlinae is a small deep-sea amphipod from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the northeastern Pacific, collected during the R/V Thomas G. Thompson expedition at a depth of over 4,000 meters.
Similar species: Astyra abyssi Boeck, 1871 (Boreal–North Atlantic) and Astyra antarctica Andres, 1997 (Antarctic–Weddell Sea).
All small crustaceans, such as amphipods, copepods, isopods, mysids, and euphausiids, play an extremely important role in our oceans, as they form the base of the marine food chain.
Etymology.
The species name “mclaughlinae” honors Ms. D. McLaughlin, who illustrated amphipods from the northeastern Pacific off the coast of California for Jerry Barnard in the 1960s.
