Info

The Anomalops katoptron is an exclusively nocturnal fish.
It only emerges from its hiding place when darkness falls and feeds on the zooplankton that rises at night.
With a size of up to 35 cm, it is by far the largest representative of the lantern fish from the Anomalopidae family.
There are 7 other known species.

The luminescent organ under the eyes is typical of these fish.
The greenish glow of these organs is caused by symbiotic bacteria living in this luminescent organ.
It is assumed that it serves to attract plankton during their nocturnal forays.
It is also assumed that it could be used to communicate with each other.

They live at depths of up to 400 meters. However, they also ascend to shallow water in search of food.
Not much is currently known about keeping them in an aquarium.
If they are kept, they should only be kept in groups with other more nocturnal fish.
