Info

Submitted by Heinz Mahler identified by worm researcher Leslie Harris (NMH) LinK: http://www.nhm.org/site/research-collections/polychaetous-annelids

Worm researcher Leslie Harris from the NHM ( Link ) has once again looked over our What is section and found something. Here she thinks it is not a foraminifera, but reminded her of a sponge. She searched again and found a close resemblance to the carnivorous(!) sponge Asbestopluma hypogea, which has so far only been found in two underwater caves in France and Croatia.“There is no reason why there shouldn't be more of these species in the world.

The sponge is a protected species, see Appendix 2 of the Bern and Barcelona Conventions. Its collection and keeping is prohibited.
