The color is usually whitish, with reddish-brown vertical stripes.
These stripes can vary in width and the normal color becomes more whitish or reddish-brown.
The spines are mostly reddish, at the base, but with white dots.

These species can form hybrids with the edible sea urchin Echinus esculentus and live in water depths of up to 100 meters on muddy and gravelly bottoms.
