Info

Zander & Jelinek, 1976

Despite its name, “cave goby,” this tiny and rare goby is only found sporadically in caves; it is most commonly found on and between rocky debris.

This small fish is endemic to the Mediterranean and Black Seas at depths of approximately 8 to 30 meters.

The goby has a reddish coloration with light spots on its back and red stripes on the underside of its flanks.

Speleogobius trigloides inhabits coral reefs, boulders, crevices, and caves in rock formations, as well as detrital coarse sandy substrates.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
