Info

(Donovan, 1808)

The star ray is a cold-water fish that feeds primarily on benthic organisms. It can locate its prey, even when buried in sand, by sensing electrically generated fields.

The skate has been recorded in water depths of 18 - 1,540 m, but prefers depths of 25 - 440 m. Cold temperate species, occurs in offshore waters on all types of bottoms, but mainly on sandy and muddy bottoms.

Color: The back of the skate is light brown with many small spots, its underside is white.
According to FishBase, the ray reaches an age of 28 years.

It is interesting to note that rays newly hatched from egg capsules instinctively follow larger objects, including other rays.

Synonyms:
Raja radiata
Raia americana DeKay, 1842
Raia scabrata Garman, 1913
