Muraenidae Rafinesque, 1815
The photos were taken by Silvia Steffen and Jörn Stahn at a night dive in Indonesia and show probably an unidentified moray eel from Halmahera. Many thanks for the photos.
This moray eel from Indonesia is still unidentified.
Smithsonian Institution
Museum Support Center:
"It looks like a member of the Gymnothorax reticularis group, but it doesn't quite match any of the known species. The only moray with a posterior nostril that long is Enchelycore pardalis, which is quite different in head shape and color pattern. It is undoubtedly something new."
FishBase 06.05.2016 " According to Dr David Smith of the Smithsonian Institution, 'this is almost certainly an undescribed species."
Biota > Animalia (Kingdom) > Chordata (Phylum) > Vertebrata (Subphylum) > Gnathostomata (Superclass) > Pisces (Superclass) > Actinopteri (Class) > Anguilliformes (Order) >Muraenidae (Family)
Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
