We sincerely thank Dr. Dr. Asuka Sentoku, Ryukyu, Japan for his permission to use his unique photo of this stony coral.
Heterocyathus sulcatus is a solitary stony coral that occurs on soft, horizontal and gently sloping bottoms, usually in association with Heteropsammnia and Cyclosers species.
There are references in the literature to an occurrence of Heterocyathus aequicostatus in the Red Sea, but we assume that this is likely Heterocyathus aequicostatus, which has been recorded several times in the Red Sea.
The Coral Trait Database of Dr. gives for Heterocyathus sulcatus that the coral is both zooxanthellate and azooxanthellate: https://coraltraits.org/species/842.
Synonyms:
Heterocyathus incrustans (Dennant, 1906)
Heterocyathus pulchellus Rehberg, 1892
Homophyllia incrustans Dennant, 1906
Psammoseris cylicioides Tenison-Woods, 1879
Stephanoseris sulcata Verrill, 1866
