Info

The combtooth blenny Scartella emarginata is widespread and is found in the intertidal zone, on very shallow reefs / reef tops and in rock pools and tide pools.
The fish has a brown coloration with variable dark vertical stripes and small dark spots.
A mane-like row of tentacles is on the top of the head. Eye and nostrils can be seen.
The teeth in the upper jaw are not movable.

Eggs are guarded by the male.

In 2008 this species was described in waters around Korea and in 2018 from Pakistan and the Persian Gulf, yet the blenny is not considered an invasive species.

Jumping guard
A jumping guard prevents (nocturnal) fish from jumping out.
Wrasses, blennies, hawkfishs and gobies jump out of an unprotected tank in fright if their night rest is disturbed, unfortunately these jumpers are found dried up in the morning on carpets, glass edges or later behind the tank.

A small night light also helps, as it provides the fish with a means of orientation in the dark!
