Info

Phymatolithon calcareum is one of the few algae that have a non-fixed life.
Although in the juvenile stage it forms thin crusts that can be observed on mussel shells, gravel, or rocks, when mature it eventually detaches from its substratum and takes the form of roughly spherical, nipple-shaped, free-living arbuscules that resemble coral rubble.

The unattached plants form marl beds in sheltered areas.
