Info

Electroma papilionacea (Lamarck, 1819)

Typical shell length: 40 mm. The winged shell is thin and fragile. Colour varies from translucent green and reddish brown to black. The shell frequently bears radiating brown or green stripes.

Electroma papilionacea lives in sheltered parts of the intertidal zone and in the shallow sublittoral among algae and seagrass. This extremely thin-shelled bivalve is often found attached to marine plants within its range.

Electroma papilionacea is endemic to south-eastern and south-western Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters it is widespread and common. It grows very rapidly, locally leading to mass proliferations, until the bivalves are eventually dislodged by wave action and washed up in large numbers on local beaches.
