Charybdis (Charybdis) lucifera (Fabricius, 1798)
Swimming crabs of the genus Charybdis are predatory crabs that prey on invertebrates, zoobenthos and small fish.
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to provide any aquaristic information on this swimming crab, but Charybdis (Charybdis) lucifera has been causing a sensation in scientific studies for some time.
Studies have shown that male swimming crabs of §lat have antimicrobial proteins in their haemoymph that are effective against Escherichia coli bacteria, while females of §lat have antimicrobial proteins (bacteria) that are effective against vibrios.
It is becoming increasingly clear that our oceans are a unique and invaluable resource, and many of their creatures may have great future benefits in human medicine. This is an important reason to effectively protect the oceans and their inhabitants.
