Charybdis is a genus of swimming crabs in the family Portunidae; "Charybdis" is Greek for whirlpool. Swimming crabs are often recorded from the trawl by-catch .
Carapace broader than long; covered with a dense short tomentum. Colour reddish brown on dorsal surface; extreme tips of the chelipeds and dactylus of the pereiopods dark pinkish brown. The Ambon swimming crab can be found on sandy and muddy bottom.
