Charybdis (Charybdis) japonica (A. Milne-Edwards, 1861)
The Japanese swimming crab Charybdis (Charybdis) japonica is an invasive and also very aggressive crab species. From its presumed first home in Japan it has made its way via Australia to the west coast of the USA. It is interesting that it has also been discovered on the east coast of the USA, however it found its way there (possibly introduced there?).
On the menu of the swimming crab is the Japanese carpet shell (Ruditapes philippinarum) in the first place, but the crab also falls on small squid.
The optimal water temperature is 20°C - 27°C, it tolerates temporarily also lower temperatures, at which its activities are however clearly diminished.
Synonyms:
Charybdis (Goniohellenus) peichihliensis Shen, 1932
Charybdis sowerbyi Rathbun, 1931
Goniosoma japonicum A. Milne-Edwards, 1861
