Info

Chaetodon marleyi Regan, 1921

Chaetodon marleyi, also known as the Doublesash Butterflyfish or South African Butterflyfish is found only near the southern tip of South Africa, adults can grow to 20.0 cm (8 inches).

The South African Butterflyfish is the only butterflyfish that occurs in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is native to the most of the South African coastline from Lambert's Bay on the Atlantic side of the Cape of Good Hope, to Delagoa Bay just north of the South Africa-Mozambique border.

Chaetodon marleyi live in variable habitats including rock, coral reefs, and estuaries where it lives among weeds. They are found at depths up to 120 meters (393 ft.).

Chaetodon marleyi are rarely exported from South Africa and are very seldom seen in the aquarium trade.

The South African Butterflyfish does better with cooler temperatures than most butterflyfish. Best to keep between 18 and 20 deg C. (64 - 68 deg. F).

Butterflyfish are not recommended for reefs as they will pick at or eat a wide variety of corals, fan worms, and other invertebrates. Most Butterflyfish are known to pick at Aiptaisia, a parasitic anemone.
