Info
Chaetodon punctatofasciatus Cuvier, 1831
Chaetodon punctatofasciatus is widely distributed in Indo-Pacific waters, from Christmas Island to the Line Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to Rowley Shoals and the northern Great Barrier Reef; throughout Micronesia, and widely distributed around coral reefs in Taiwan.
The spot-banded butterflyfish has a yellow-brown body. As it matures, it becomes more yellow on the back, with about seven vertical dark stripes on the upper half of the body and rows of dark spots below. It resembles Chaetodon pelewensis, which has diagonal bands. The typical pattern clearly distinguishes it from the similar Chaetodon citrinellus and Chaetodon mertensii.
Chaetodon punctatofasciatus is very common in coral-rich areas and in the clear waters of lagoons and reefs by the sea. It lives in pairs.
Remarks:Butterflyfishes are not recommended for reef aquaria as they pick at or eat a variety of corals, tubeworms and other invertebrates. Most butterflyfish are known to peck at Aiptaisia. Chaetodon punctatofasciatus is also said to eat filamentous algae according to fishbase.
